Edgar Plans
“A canvas is never white in the eyes of an artist, it’s the mirror of their ideas.”
Both vivid and raw in nature, Spanish contemporary artist, Edgar Plans, provides a visual language adorned with mouse-like, big-eyed, cartoon characters against backdrops of lively doodles and scrawl. His recognised characters, Hero Animals, have come to represent his reckless and playful emphasis on life, in conjunction with his observations of criticism and socio-political issues, as well as stories from his imagination.
Born in Madrid in 1977, art was always present in the Plans’ household, and creativity was always encouraged. His father, Juan Jose, set up a chair and table in his office allowing Edgar the freedom to paint and draw. Plans opposed the ideas of what constituted art, preferring to draw comic strips that expressed a narrative. Inspired by the freedom of graffiti and street art, at 15 years old, he began experimenting with different disciplines and techniques, discovering the desire to express his truths through painting and drawing. He rented a room in an art studio and continued his training. He received a degree in Art History from the University of Oviedo, and continued to develop his cache of paintings.
The discipline of painting is as important as the use of colours. One of Plan’s earliest creations, ‘Untitled’ (2015-2017) depicts a cityscape, representing the integration of wordplay and image. His beloved Animal Heroes play mischievously, splashing paints, animals and squiggles across the canvas.
Edgar Plan’s multidisciplinary works recalls a range of influences, from Jean-Michel Basquiat, to Takashi Murakami. Plans has exhibited internationally, including WAREHOUSE Gallery in Hong Kong and Art Basel Miami, where he made his auction debut. Most recently, Plans has ventured into digital NFT tokens with his ‘Lil Heroes’, constantly playing with the wider notions of art.
